Set between the original Half-Life and Half-Life 2 games, “Half-Life: Alyx” places VR players inside a tense fight against the post-invasion, authoritarian occupation of the Combine. The game won numerous awards and set the bar for action VR experiences. The musical score plays an essential role in the game, setting the emotional tone as well as underscoring the grand arc of the game’s storyline. The soundtrack continues in the tradition of the Half-Life series and is a mixture of ominous ambient textures, pulsating electronics and hybrid Teneysian compositions that amplify the unease, emotional weight and extended realities of the game’s world. On its own, the soundtrack creates a highly immersive listening experience, capturing the bleak, futuristic mood that defines the Half-Life universe. Valve and Ipecac Recordings’ partnership dates back nearly 15 years to the release of “Portal 2: Songs to Test By.” Since then, the collaboration has released some of the biggest video game soundtracks including “Fight Songs: The Music of Team Fortress 2”, “Dota 2”, “Counter Strike 2” and the “Half-Life” series. |
